Medicine is an imperfect science.

As a practicing Emergency Room Physician for the past two decades, I have had the distinct honor of working alongside incredible professionals while caring for thousands of patients.

Emergency Departments often exist at the edge of chaos. Despite our best attempts, sometimes things don’t go as we want.

Every death that occurs in a hospital triggers questions. What happened? Could something have been done? Was something missed? Was it unexpected? Would doing something sooner have helped? These questions are not only asked by the family, but by the care team. Careful planning & delivery of care cannot always prevent complications or death.

Yet sometimes errors are made., complications occur, and side effects exist. Determination of the quality of care delivered to a patient exists at the intersection of real time healthcare delivery & retrospective review of the known information at that moment.

It is a privilege to serve as an expert medical witness. It provides the opportunity to bring closure to a family, a physician, or even a hospital system. The gravity of the situation demands careful consideration of the facts and continued monitoring of bias that affects us all. It provides an opportunity to point out where care was exemplary or at least met an appropriate standard, despite the results. Equally important is the ability to recognize where the system broke down, and the patient did not receive appropriate care & treatment.
